Majjige Huli is a South Indian curry dish that is usually prepared using yogurt and coconut. Mainly water based vegetables are used. However, these days its common to find majjige huli made with ivy gourd, okra, potatoes, etc. Its usually prepared during festivals and for family functions.
Steps to make Majjige Huli / Curd curry:
- Firstly soak chana dal and peppercons for half and hour
- Now in a mixer grinder add all the ingredients under to grind and make a fine paste
- In a pan heat oil, add mustard seeds, turmeric powder hing curry leaves and let it splutter.Add chopped bottle gourd and cook till soft.
- Add the ground masala and saute till the raw smell goes, now add curd and 1 cup water and mix well.. Add salt and sugar and cook for 5 mins.. Remember to whisk the curd before adding or else it will curdle..
- Serve it hot with plain rice and ghee..
Majjige Huli is one of the famous dish from South Canara. Majjige means butter milk and Huli is curry. This dish used to be prepared from my doddamma in ooru Udyavara. Udyavara means a loving place to me. I have so many childhood memories in my Doddamma house.
