Juicy on the inside, crispy and golden brown on the outside, these Japanese pan-fried dumplings, Gyoza, are popular weeknight meal as well as a great appetizer for your next dinner party. Japanese gyoza are like Chinese dumplings and potstickers but use thinner skins and finely ground meat. Gyoza are a more delicate than the usual potsticker.

The ingredients needed to make Gyoza:
  1. Prepare 1 cup ground beef (340g)
  2. Get 5 oz cabbage finely chopped (5/8 cup)
  3. Prepare 2 green onion (minced)

Unike most dumplings, gyoza are both steamed and fried. Gyoza, or potstickers, are thin-skinned dumplings filled with meat and vegetables. The process for making gyoza can be lengthy, and it is common for Japanese families to prepare them together. Yaki gyoza are by far the most common type of gyoza.

Steps to make Gyoza:
  1. In a large mixing bowl. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Or use a food processor if you have one.
  2. Make sure cabbage is blanched for 3 secs in boiling water or microwave for 15 secs for easier mixing.
  3. Put 1 teaspoonful of meatball in the middle of the pot sticker wrapper.
  4. Line inner half of the wrapper with water. And fold in half against the dry side.
  5. Press pot stickers together using side of thumb and index finger. (I'm lazy so yeah lol)
  6. By following steps above gyoza should stand on it's own.
  7. In nonstick cooking pan, pour sesame oil and vegetable oil and fry the bottom of the gyoza until brown.
  8. Add water and cover to steam cook gyoza. Serve hot and enjoy.
  9. You can also add as an ingredient to chicken soup. Which I'll be uploading in a few minutes. 😊

They are pan fried in a hot skillet before a mixture of water and cornstarch is poured in and everything is covered for a few minutes. Place a plate on top of gyoza. Flip the pan upside down while pressing the plate to invert the dumplings. Authentic Gyoza, is so simple yet so delicious! Every country has their own form of some kind of dumplings, and this Japanese authentic gyoza is definitely one of the simple dumplings you can make.
